What is Drive Smart?
Drive Smart is a Motability Scheme app designed to encourage safer driving habits and reduce accidents.
It uses a small device fitted in your car, paired with an app on your phone, to track things like speed, braking, and acceleration.
Customers who built a strong weekly driving score could earn up to £160 a year in rewards to spend at retailers including Asda and M&S.
Why has Drive Smart been paused?
The Motability Scheme announced the pause on 14th May 2026, acknowledging that the experience of using the app had not been what it should be and had caused concern for some customers.
Motability has made clear that the goals behind Drive Smart - safer roads and lower insurance costs - remain important, but the experience needs to feel fair and right for customers before any return.
What does this mean for you?
From 22nd May 2026, Motability began removing customers from Drive Smart unless they chose to keep using it.
If you did not want to continue, no action was needed - Motability removed customers from the system automatically, with any journey data retained in line with their data and privacy policy.
Customers who wanted to carry on using Drive Smart were asked to opt in by 21st May 2026, by completing the form in their Motability email.
What happens to the device?
If you have a Drive Smart windscreen device, you can remove it from your vehicle and keep it safe. If your vehicle has a fitted box, Motability deactivated it remotely from 22nd May.
Any rewards earned before 22nd May could be redeemed and spent before that date. The Drive Smart app can be deleted and any app notifications during the transition period can be ignored.
What comes next for Drive Smart?
Motability will work with customers to understand what needs to change. They plan to invite customers who have used Drive Smart to join a new research group through their Headlight Community, to help shape how the programme develops.
Drive Smart will only return once Motability is confident the experience better meets customer needs. When it does, customers will receive plenty of notice if it applies to their lease.
