Whether you have trouble coaxing the dog into the boot, struggle to squeeze a pram in, or end up squashing ingredients after the weekly food shop, sometimes you just need a bigger boot.

If you're on the hunt for a plug-in hybrid, or even just looking for a car with more storage space, here are some practical PHEVs with some of the largest boot capacities available at Vertu.

Skoda Kodiaq iV – 745 litres

The Skoda Kodiaq is a class-leading PHEV when it comes to boot space – an already cavernous 745-litre boot expands to 1,945 litres with the rear seats down, making light work of flat-pack furniture trips, house moves or even camping expeditions.

Within the cabin, there’s plenty of room to go around in both the front and back – the Kodiaq provides ample leg room to stretch and relax, as well as great shoulder room for three adults side by side in the rear seats.

Skoda provides a wealth of ingenious storage and practicality solutions throughout the car, with plenty of cubby spaces in the cabin, as well as Skoda’s “Simply Clever” touches - from door-edge protectors, an integrated windscreen washer funnel and boot organisation features, making everyday life with the Kodiaq even easier.

Hyundai Tucson PHEV – 558 litres

The Hyundai Tucson wins second place for boot capacity with 558-litres of space, increasing to 1,737-litres with the rear seats down. Helpfully, the rear row folds in a 40:20:40 split, so you don’t have to worry about fitting awkward cargo (such as long flat pack furniture, camping equipment or skis) alongside passengers.

The Tucson’s interior is versatile enough for busy work weeks, as well as activity-packed weekends, and on the outside, the rather eye-catching, daring design makes good use of sharp angles and futuristic shapes.

Aside from its eye-catching looks, the Tucson combines a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 13.8 kWh battery, generating 265 horsepower, sending power to all four wheels and providing an electric-only driving range of up to 31–38 miles (WLTP).

Kia Sportage PHEV – 540 litres

The Kia Sportage is hot on the heels of the Tucson, with a boot capacity of 540-litres, expanding to 1,715-litres with the 40:20:40 split rear seats down.

The Kia Sportage is one of the most popular family SUVs in the UK, owing to its practicality, equipment, value for money, as well as Kia’s transferable seven-year warranty.

Along with the boot space, the Sportage has an all-wheel drive system in place that helpfully distributes power to whichever wheel needs it most, meaning if you lose grip or accelerate harder, more power will be sent to the rear wheels to balance this out, giving you a controlled and sturdy ride, no matter how much is packed in the boot.

The Sportage pairs a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with a 13.8 kWh battery, delivering a combined 268 horsepower and providing about 34 miles of all-electric driving and standard all-wheel drive.

Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid – 490 litres

The Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid is designed to fit seamlessly into the family, whether you’re taking it on repeated school runs or adventurous weekends away – and with a 490-litre boot, it's suited to buggies, bags, camping kit and anything in between.

The Tiguan eHybrid pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 19.7 kWh battery, giving you up to 77 miles of electric driving. The car is available in 204 hp and 272 hp outputs, and refreshingly, it also features 50 kW DC rapid charging.

BYD Seal U DM-i – 425 litres

The BYD Seal U DM-i doesn’t have the biggest boot compared to some of the others on this list, with its 425-litre capacity, but manages to maintain a high level of practicality despite a sleeker, sportier shape than the rest.

The Seal U is a great choice for those interested in a high level of equipment alongside practicality – even the entry-level trim, Boost, comes with a panoramic sunroof, Infinity 10-speaker sound system, heated front seats and heated steering wheel, among other luxury features.

Passenger space is plentiful in the Seal U, with loads of room to accommodate six-footers as well as bulky child seats in the rear, with ISOFIX points in the outer seats.

In the Boost and Design trims, the 1.5-litre petrol works alongside an 18.2kWh battery, offering a range of 50 miles in Boost, and 43 in Design. The Comfort model, however, has a larger 26.6kWh battery, increasing the range to an impressive 77 miles.
